This chapter of the expedition will focus on big
wave surfing as well as capturing the river on film for one of
the last times.
China is undertaking its greatest industrial project since
the Great Wall was built. To feed China’s exponentially
growing need
for power they have commissioned countless hydroelectric projects
with
13 dams proposed on the Salween, some of which lie on three parallel
rivers and World Heritage listed areas.
In this area there are 6,000 different plant
species and 13 different ethnic groups,
all of which will be drastically affected by the dams.
Despite World Heritage listing, China will go ahead with the dam
projects and the River experienced will not be the same for our
children,
all we will have is the photos and film of what once was.
Two Weeks will be spent on the Salween with the
world best freestyle paddlers filming for both "the Calling,
A Film by Lachie Carracher " and "Frontier - River Roots"
Chapter Two
SUMATRA - The Jungel
Sumatra is a corner of the world that is unexplored
in terms of white
water kayaking.
This is not the only reason why I am drawn to there, as a child
I
remember doing a school project on Sumatra and the amazing biodiversity
of its jungles. Unfortunately Sumatra is being cut down at a rate
unparalleled in human history.
In my recent research (leading back 3 year now) I have discovered
that Sumatra
has a large number of beautiful clean and tall waterfalls.
In Sumatra I plan to hire a 4wd vehicle and travel to these waterfalls.
capturing a place that without question will be very different
in the
coming century. This Chapter plans to record an incredible place
while
running big waterfalls and paddling unseen and un-run white water.
Time Will also be spent in the forgotten Clasic
of the Asahan Valley. This Valley is a Jungel white water heaven
for big water and creeks, Check out the Video from Joel Kowalski
and Myself in 2009. The Asahan is one of my Favourite runs of
all time.
